History, the Olympics & Mont Blanc
Chamonix–Mont-Blanc hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924 — a fact that still defines the town's character. The Aiguille du Midi cable car, ascending to 3,842m, opened in 1955 and remains one of the highest vertical ascents in the world. The town sits at 1,035m beneath the 4,808m summit of Mont Blanc — Europe's highest peak — and the scale of the mountains above the valley is genuinely startling on first arrival.
The Vallée Blanche off-piste descent — 20 km from the Aiguille du Midi back to Chamonix town — is one of the great ski experiences on earth. It is skiable by confident intermediate skiers with a guide and attracts around 80,000 descents per season.
Skiing the Chamonix Valley
Chamonix's ski terrain is spread across several separate areas: Les Grands Montets above Argentière (expert terrain, the steepest in France), Le Brévent and La Flégère (panoramic views of Mont Blanc, ideal for intermediates), Les Houches (trees, wind protection, family terrain), and Le Tour with its cross-border Balme area linking to Switzerland. Each mountain has its own character — and each village in the valley is at the base of a different lift system.
We know where every chairlift is and deliver you to the right building, whether that is a Grands Montets-side chalet in Argentière or a Brévent-side apartment on the route des Gaillands.
Lyon vs Geneva — Which Airport for Chamonix?
This is the question every Chamonix-bound skier flying from the UK or Ireland asks. Geneva Airport (GVA) is 1 hour 15 minutes from Chamonix — significantly closer. But Lyon Airport (LYS) offers direct routes from London, Manchester, Dublin, Edinburgh, and other UK/Irish cities, often at fares 30 to 50% lower than Geneva equivalents.
For many skiers — particularly groups — the saving on four or six return flights more than compensates for an extra 75 minutes in a comfortable Mercedes. The private transfer cost from Lyon is also lower than from Geneva. We make the maths work in your favour.
Chamonix in Summer
Chamonix is emphatically not just a winter destination. The valley draws trail runners from around the world — the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), one of the world's most prestigious ultramarathons, circles the massif every August. The Aiguille du Midi offers year-round sightseeing, Via Ferratas open from June, and the valley cycling trails are uncrowded and spectacular.
We transfer clients to Chamonix in every season. Summer bookings are typically made with less lead time — but availability fills quickly in August around the UTMB weekend.
Onward to Italy — Mont Blanc Tunnel
Chamonix is the French gateway to Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley — 20 minutes through the Mont Blanc tunnel. If your stay includes nights in both resorts, or you are connecting to Italy after landing at Lyon, we can arrange a Chamonix–Courmayeur transfer as part of the same journey.
