The Resort & Its Character
Les Deux Alpes is a single long linear village in the Oisans valley, stretching along a high plateau at 1,650m. Unlike purpose-built stations built around a central square, Les Deux Alpes has a relaxed, extended layout — ski lifts access the mountain from multiple points along the plateau, and the après-ski scene has kept the resort popular with a younger, international crowd for decades.
The skiing is diverse: wide-open glacier runs at the top for confident skiers, broad motorway blues on the middle mountain for intermediates, and tree-lined runs at the bottom for poor-visibility days. The total ski area covers 225 km of marked runs across 96 trails — not the largest domain in the Alps, but one of the most varied in terms of altitude range (1,650m to 3,600m).
The Glacier — 3,600m & Summer Skiing
The main attraction that sets Les Deux Alpes apart from most French ski resorts is its glacier skiing. At 3,600m, the Dôme de la Lauze is home to Europe's largest skiable glacier — accessible via the Jandri Express funicular and gondola system from the village. The glacier offers reliable skiing from winter through to early September, when most other resorts close entirely.
For summer skiing guests arriving at Lyon Airport, our private transfer operates identically to the winter service — same fixed prices, same vehicles. The glacier surface is typically at its best in June and July when daytime temperatures at 3,600m keep the snow firm and dry.
Alpe d'Huez — The Oisans Combination
Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d'Huez are both in the Oisans valley and are often combined in a single ski week. They do not share a ski connection (unlike La Plagne and Les Arcs), but the road between them via Bourg-d'Oisans takes approximately 45 minutes — a realistic day trip from either resort.
For clients wanting to ski both mountains, we can arrange the connecting leg as a separate transfer. We also serve all Alpe d'Huez villages directly from Lyon Airport — see our Alpe d'Huez transfer page for details and pricing.
Lyon Airport — The Natural Gateway
With just 160 km between Lyon Airport and Les Deux Alpes, Lyon is the closest major international airport to the resort. The transfer is shorter than from Grenoble Airport (which has limited international routes) and competitive with Lyon in terms of journey time.
Lyon Airport (LYS) offers direct connections from the UK (London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh), Ireland (Dublin), and major European hubs. Flight prices to Lyon from the UK are typically 20 to 40% below Geneva equivalents — an important saving for a group of four or more.
Mountain Biking & Summer Activities
Beyond summer skiing, Les Deux Alpes has become one of France's leading mountain bike destinations. The Bike Park opens in late May with over 20 marked downhill tracks and a gondola to carry bikes up. Hikers access the GR54 Tour de l'Oisans from the village.
We transfer mountain bikers and summer visitors from Lyon Airport using the same vehicles — bikes and bike bags travel free in the same way ski equipment does in winter.
