La Plagne — 10 Villages, One Mountain
La Plagne is one of the most visited ski resorts in the world, receiving over 2.5 million skier days per season. Unlike a conventional resort built around a single village, La Plagne is a collection of 10 purpose-built and traditional villages spread across a high-altitude plateau between 1,250m and 2,100m. Each village sits at the foot of its own lift system — which means no matter which one you stay in, you are ski-in ski-out (or very close to it).
The character varies considerably between villages. Belle Plagne and Plagne 2000 are high-altitude purpose-built stations — maximum snow reliability, minimal walking, but minimal soul. Champagny-en-Vanoise and Montchavin-les-Coches are the opposite: traditional Savoyard stone villages with far more character, lower prices, and the same lift access to the full domain. Plagne Centre sits in the middle — a convenient commercial hub for families who prioritise proximity to the ski school and supermarkets.
Paradiski — 425 km with Les Arcs
La Plagne and Les Arcs are linked by the Vanoise Express — Europe's largest cable car, a double-decker gondola carrying 200 passengers per cabin across the Ponturin gorge in approximately 7 minutes. Together they form the Paradiski domain: 425 km of marked runs, 141 lifts, and terrain from gentle nursery slopes to off-piste couloirs for experts.
A single ski pass covers both resorts. In practice, most skiers explore one domain per day rather than crossing daily — but the connection gives the domain a sense of scale that rewards a full week's exploration. We transfer to Les Arcs villages directly from Lyon as a separate booking if needed.
The 1992 Albertville Olympics Bobsled Track
La Plagne hosted the bobsled, luge, and skeleton events of the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. The track at La Roche — a concrete ribbon dropping 1,500 metres through the forest above Champagny — is still operational today and open to the public for passenger rides in natural ice bobsled (the Taxi-Bob). It is one of only 16 natural ice tracks remaining worldwide and gives La Plagne a genuine Olympic history that most competing resorts cannot match.
For groups combining skiing with a Taxi-Bob experience, we can time your Lyon Airport pickup to ensure you arrive at La Plagne with enough daylight for an afternoon run before the track closes.
Lyon Airport — The Smart Gateway for La Plagne
Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport is 220 km from La Plagne — approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. Geneva Airport is slightly closer at around 2 hours 15 minutes, but Lyon consistently offers lower flight prices from the UK, Ireland, and Northern Europe. For a family of four or five, the difference in flight cost can cover the entire transfer. Both airports work well for La Plagne — the best choice depends on your specific flights and dates.
Choosing Between La Plagne Villages
Not sure which village to book? When you make your transfer booking, tell us your priorities — ski convenience, budget, family with young children, après-ski, character over altitude — and we can advise. We transfer to all 10 villages regularly and know the practical differences between them.
